Fever checklist
Temperature >= 38.3 °C (100.9 °F), in immunocompromised/neutropenia >= 38.0 ° (100.4 °F)
Patient history
- respiratory: coughing, dyspnea, pleuritic pain
- gastrointestinal: vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain with location
- post-surgery: time of surgery, protheses, etc.
- urinary: dysuria, polyuria
- previous medications (think drug induced fever)
- previous antibiotics can influence future therapy
- previous infections (multiresistant bacteria)
- rheumatic diseases
Diagnostic
- CRP, Leukocytes, Procalcitonin
- blood count, if needed differential blood count
- fever in neutropenia: absolute neutrophil count < 500 to 1.000/µl (= neutrophils (%) * leukocytes count)
- Blood cultures (two pairs from to sites)
- Urine sample, sputum samples, swabs
- Ultrasound, X-Ray if CT is planned
Therapy
- Paracetamol
- Antibiotics depending on focus
