Fever checklist

Temperature >= 38.3 °C (100.9 °F), in immunocompromised/neutropenia >= 38.0 ° (100.4 °F)

Patient history

• respiratory: coughing, dyspnea, pleuritic pain
• gastrointestinal: vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain with location
• post-surgery: time of surgery, protheses, etc.
• urinary: dysuria, polyuria
• previous medications (think drug induced fever)
  • previous antibiotics can influence future therapy
• previous infections (multiresistant bacteria)
• rheumatic diseases

Diagnostic

• CRP, Leukocytes, Procalcitonin
• blood count, if needed differential blood count
  • fever in neutropenia: absolute neutrophil count < 500 to 1.000/µl (= neutrophils (%) * leukocytes count)
• Blood cultures (two pairs from to sites)
• Urine sample, sputum samples, swabs
• Ultrasound, X-Ray if CT is planned

Therapy

• Paracetamol
• Antibiotics depending on focus
